Apple unveils the most beautiful photos taken with the macro mode of the iPhone 13 Pro

This is one of the great novelties of the latest flagships of the apple brand. The Pro and Pro Max models of the iPhone 13 have a new mode that will delight budding photographers: macro. A particularly successful feature, which offers striking results, as evidenced by the 10 shots selected by Apple in the context of the contest Shot on iPhone Macro Challenge.

Despite appearances, the iPhone 13 present real novelties compared to their predecessors. In terms of performance of course, thanks to the new A15 Bionic chip, but also (and above all) in terms of their camera, which has undergone various improvements.

This can be seen, moreover, with more imposing objectives. If we stay with the same configuration, i.e. wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle sensors on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, plus a telephoto lens on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, all 12 Mpxl, this are indeed larger pixels on the main sensor (1.7 µm and 1.9 µm) which notably make the difference across the entire range. The other objectives were of course also entitled to a small upgrade, especially on the Pro models which have a better optical zoom (3x) and a completely redesigned ultra wide-angle. This indeed benefits from a much larger aperture (f / 1.8 against f / 2.4 on the iPhone 12 Pro) and its own autofocus system. As a result, not only are the photos taken with a 120° field of view sharper and brighter, but this has allowed Apple to introduce a great novelty on its iPhones: the macro!

Focus at 2 centimeters for detailed macro photos

While other manufacturers have long chosen to explore this photographic technique, generally through a dedicated sensor, the Apple brand is indeed tackling it for the first time on its iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro. Max. And it is therefore, as surprising as it may seem, through the ultra wide-angle that it offers this mode which makes it possible to take subjects, even the smallest, very (very) close to capture the slightest details. A magic trick achieved both thanks to the aforementioned improvements, and both thanks to the most advanced software processing. The iPhone 13 Pro also automatically recognize when you want to take a macro photo: the feature is triggered as soon as you get a few centimeters closer to the subject (note however that it is also possible to choose enable manually, via Camera Settings).

While it can go up to two centimeters minimum distance to focus, the new ultra wide-angle of the Pro models thus offers breathtaking macro photos. We could see it in our own test of the iPhone 13 Pro, the device having shown itself as well able to capture the beauty of a flower as the inscriptions – almost invisible to the naked eye – on a banknote. 10 euros…

The 10 winners of Apple’s macro photo contest

But it is with all humility that we admit that the result is all the more striking in the hands of real photography pros! Quite proud of its little technological prowess, Apple recently decided to launch a competition open to “iPhone photographers around the world” : the Shot on iPhone Macro Challenge. A contest in which all the lucky owners of an iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro Max could participate, who thus had the opportunity to show their talent in macro photography. On April 13, the famous American manufacturer unveiled the shots that were selected as big winners, by “a panel of specialists” from all over the world. And that’s where we take our hats off.

A total of 10 artists, from Italy, India, Argentina, the United States and Thailand have seen their work rewarded – by being highlighted on Apple’s social networks or even on billboards. in some cities. The winners: a hibiscus flower, droplets on a spider’s web, or even snowflakes on a dog’s coat… 10 shots showing both the talent of the photographers, who at least had the eye to spot these little wonders of nature, than all the quality of the macro mode of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro max, in view of the impeccable sharpness and the brilliant colors in these photos. We let you judge:
