American comedian Dave Chappelle was assaulted on stage during a stand-up show in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, the Hollywood Reporter reported.

The comedian was attending the “Netflix Is A Joke” festival, held at the Hollywood Bowl, when he was assaulted, the magazine added, citing video footage of the incident shared on social media.

These images show an unidentified person going on stage and attacking the comedian before being subdued by security officials. Dave Chappelle recently faced accusations of transphobia for making fun of transgender people.

Los Angeles police issued no immediate statement regarding the incident.

Last October, Netflix found itself embroiled in a controversy over freedom of expression in the United States after the airing of a show by the comedian, “The Closer”, in which the stand-up star responds to criticism l accusing him of transphobia.

In this show condemned by LGBTQ groups, he claimed that “gender is a fact” and that his critics are “too sensitive”. “In our country, you can shoot and kill” a black man, “but don’t you dare offend a gay person,” said Dave Chappelle, himself black.

In March, American comedian Chris Rock was slapped on stage by actor Will Smith during the Oscars ceremony after a joke about the latter’s wife’s cropped hair.
