We have been hearing about IoT in all technology conferences for a few years already, and there are still several misunderstandings around this technology, or rather this grouping containing a multitude of technologies, so let’s try to make an explanation of it to clear up these misunderstandings.

It’s quite simply the technologies that make it possible to interconnect objects. This connection is made either between themselves when they are equipped with a basic processing intelligence, or with a central intelligence interface for collecting and processing data when they are only equipped with a collection mechanism for transmitting data. data, or both at the same time.
One of the misunderstandings surrounding the IoT is that it is equivalent to the development of pure Industrial or Sensory Hardware, typically with Arduinos and Raspberry-Pi in mind. But don’t forget that your smartphone is a connected object, your television is a connected object, your tablet, your fridge and so on. We are surrounded by connected objects in our daily life, and it is up to us to make the most of them to facilitate and enrich it.
Compared to AI and Blockchain where there is still a lot of debate around the subjects, IoT technologies have gone through an important phase of demystification, where we have seen the drop in the use of connected watches and Fitbits among others, more the inconvenience caused in the user experience (always need to be recharged, limited autonomy, minimum information accessible, price-point, etc.), especially since personal Hardware has now become a convenience and not an innovation, and therefore the race is rather turned to the optimization of costs, functionalities and autonomy, with processors that have become more efficient and less expensive (Can even find a QuadCore at $5), bundles of microscopic sensors, and generic collectible hardware from wide-spectrum sensory information, more than it is for the development of new hardware solutions, especially since everything that is done in convenience hardware is duplicated in Asia for a third of the price and t a very similar quality.
The result of this demystification of the hardware for IoT as such, the competitiveness of the generic market, the difficulty of defending the patents of hardware solutions, and the presumptions of price among consumers, pushed innovation rather towards Software and Firmware, which is installed on generic hardware, modified a minimum for the sake of optimization, offering scalable functionalities, thanks to OS optimized for hardware, such as Embedded Linux for complex cases running different software, intelligence embedded artificial or other, Embedded C for coding algorithmic logic with basic data collection and processing, or even the new Harmony OS developed by Huawei to optimize the use and functionality of its proprietary Smart Devices.
Applications in everyday life
But stepping outside the technical framework of the technology as such, the use of the IoT in the customer service trades and industries, from retail to purchase funnels, to real estate sales services and the hospitality, bank credit and 24/7 customer service simulations, form a fascinating example of the impact of the IoT on the customer journey and experience, a textbook case in disrupting traditional industries.
This transformation is more than avant-garde in New York, for example, where based on your frequent shopper data, a camera detecting your size and build will suggest stores, or even sets to buy, as soon as you enter the mall!
There are of course slightly more conservative examples, nevertheless proof of progress in adoption, where several of our Moroccan clients in the sectors mentioned have had to adapt their digital transformation strategy to this challenge, by integrating Interactive Terminals to improve the customer journey by connecting them to information in their online space, helping them choose products/services, personalizing their experience.
