Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a film directed by Sam Raimi, an artist known in particular for the Evil Dead and Spider-Man sagas in the cinema, and scripted by Michael Waldron (Rick and Morty, Loki). Available in French cinemas on May 4, 2022, the feature film is an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and continues phase 4 of Marvel Studios’ ambitious franchise, a phase that began with the WandaVision series on Disney+ in March 2021 and now rich of 11 projects (6 series, and 5 films) while waiting for the continuation of the adventures of the Avengers.

Unsurprisingly, Doctor Strange 2 directly follows the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home and the What if…? and Loki, all released in 2021. Stephen Strange then altered the multiverse and caused a rift between realities by “simply” coming to Peter Parker’s aid. At the end of the film, Spider-Man regained his anonymity, and with him his alter ego Peter Parker, even with those who are dear to him. A new destiny now awaits the Spider-Man. The sorcerer will have to face the consequences of decisions taken and acts committed in the past, and face an enemy determined to upset the established order… even if it means endangering the multiverse.

Best Marvel Cinematic Universe movie?

It is always difficult to answer a question of this nature as the said answer certainly depends on the intrinsic qualities of the film, but also and above all on our own perception and our expectations. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness “objectively” runs the show. Even better, we are indeed in the presence of a film “made in” Sam Raimi both the director’s gimmicks – debubbled shots, exaggerated zooms, fisheye effects, absurd violence, etc. – and the quotations to his past works, but not only, transpire on the screen.

There emerges from this Doctor Strange 2 a strange impression, that of being faced with a horrific comedy stamped with the seal of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Seeing the MCU emancipate itself in this way and exploiting the creative touch so characteristic of Evil Dead, the Spider-Man trilogy and Down to Hell has nothing to displease us… quite the contrary. This new stone brought to the cinematographic edifice supervised by Kevin Feige should delight fans of singular and eye-catching visuals… all things considered. We remain in a saga calibrated for the general public, it should not be forgotten. Nevertheless, In the Multiverse of Madness goes off the beaten track, and clearly does not lack imagination. Impossible to blame him for anything on this point.

Even the storyline, which could have gotten bogged down in the web of the multiverse, manages to stay consistent throughout. The film introduces new characters, which prove central to the narrative and essential for the future of the MCU, and concludes certain narrative arcs in a beautiful way. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is in my eyes one of the most successful creations of Marvel Studios, and this since the first steps of Iron Man in 2008, 14 years ago. Sam Raimi and his teams show generosity and creativity while perfectly fitting this new wizarding adventure into a universe destined to expand again and again.

The future of the MCU

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is just one step, no matter how enjoyable and successful, in the MCU. During the second half of 2022, there are no less than two films (Thor Love and Thunder, Black Panther Wakanda Forever) and four series (What if…? season 2, Mrs Marvel, she hulk and I Am Groot) which will come to enrich the cinematographic universe produced by Disney. The events and the outcome of Sam Raimi’s film will have significant consequences on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even if the multiverse and alternative temporalities alone allow them to correct / alter / transform the scripts to come as they wish.
