news culture Spiderman: Sony has revealed the next supervillain of its universe at the cinema

For the past few years, Sony has been trying to create an extended universe in the vein of the MCU. And for good reason, the three supervillain productions that have emerged since 2018 will experience several sequels connected to this universe. We recently learned some news that will surely delight fans of the charismatic antagonists of the Spider-Man world.

  • The Sony Spider-Man Universe
  • A new villain: El Muerto
  • What connections with the MCU?

The Sony Spider-Man Universe

Surely you know the Marvel Cinematic Universe if you’re a fan of Spider-Man, and the Avengers in general. Sony is trying to innovate by offering us films featuring known villains, and others a little less, original comics. The Japanese audiovisual giant begins its odyssey with Venom in 2018, directed by Ruben Fleischer (Uncharted, Zombieland). With its Metacritic score of 35%, we can easily say that Venom failed to convince the specialized press. The second part, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, broadcast in 2021, raises the bar a bit with a score of 49%. More recently, on April 1, 2022, Morbius was released, which places Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius.

Even if the films of this brand new universe have not been able to conquer the hearts of the public, Sony does not budge, and promises us titles featuring other supervillains in the coming years.

A new villain: El Muerto

Is the CinemaCon 2022 that Sony Pictures has announced to us the El Muerto project, already placed in the American calendar for January 14, 2024. The icing on the cake, the successful Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny was approached by Sony for what appears to be the role of El Muerto. Indeed, El Muerto, aka Juan Carlos, is a Latin wrestler who fights against Spider-Man during a frenzied match. After his defeat, our wrestler is attacked by El Dorado, a minor villain from the Spider-Man universe. Luckily for him, El Muerto gets help from Spider-Man to defeat the man in the golden mask. This is where Bad Bunny comes in, as Sony plans to use this original story to expand its universe.

But don’t wait to see Bad Bunny in theaters right away! Sony Pictures is already planning two feature films for 2023. Kraven the Hunter, and Madame Webtwo iconic villains from the comics, will hit the big screen next year.

What connections with the MCU?

On the side of Marvel, you could see the links between the USS and the mcu in Spider-Man: No Way Home. In addition, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield have made a sensational appearance in the universe of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. A way to demonstrate that their worlds are connected through this very large multiverse. Together the three Spider-Men have faced all the canonical and emblematic villains of the saga. It is producer Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Into the Spider verse) who confirmed that Sony still intends to place their films in the MCU.
